Hi everyone! I'm Pauline Yu (PYY), Taiwan's only 4× Hyrox World Championship qualifier. Sanya is a race stop I haven't lined up on yet, but the moment I saw a tropical beach city landing on the Hyrox calendar, I got excited. Picture finishing eight brutal run stations and then walking straight out toward palm trees and warm ocean air. This debut event lands December 5-6, and I want to help you plan smart so your first Sanya trip feels smooth and joyful.

Venue & Course

Hyrox Sanya takes over the Poly International Expo Center in Haitang District, at No. 33 Jianglin Road. It's a modern single-story exhibition hall covering roughly 28,200 square meters, part of a larger 50,000-square-meter complex that can hold between 15,000 and 20,000 people. That kind of open indoor space is exactly what Hyrox thrives in, giving that big stadium-like buzz. Since this is Sanya's debut event, no official floor plan has been published yet, so I won't pretend to know the exact layout.

What I can tell you is the format never changes: a 1km run, then one functional workout, repeated eight times, with the Roxzone acting as the hub where you transition between every run and station. Until Hyrox releases the Sanya venue map, the exact lap count, running surface and Roxzone dimensions stay unknown, so treat anything specific with caution. My advice is to walk the course the day before, count your run laps yourself, and note where the Roxzone sits so race-day navigation feels automatic.

  • ▸The venue address in Chinese for taxis and navigation is 保利国际博览中心 海南省三亚市海棠区江林路33号, so save it on your phone before you fly.
  • ▸Because the exhibition hall is single-story and huge, arrive early to scout the Roxzone and station order once the official map appears near race day.

Things to Do

Sanya is a genuine tropical holiday city, so build in a couple of recovery days. The Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone is home to the towering Guanyin of Nanshan statue, one of the tallest statues in the world and a peaceful place to walk. Yalong Bay is reputed to have the best seawater and beach in Sanya, though it sits more than 20km from downtown. Wuzhizhou Island near Haitang Bay is a coral-reef gem loved by snorkelers and divers, and it's close to the venue.

For something more relaxed, Dadonghai Beach and Sanya Bay are central and easy to reach, while Tianya Haijiao is the classic coastal landmark for photos. If you're staying near the venue in Haitang Bay, the Sanya International Duty-Free Shopping Mall and the Atlantis Sanya resort with its water park are right there. Yanoda Rainforest Area is perfect for a one-day jungle adventure if you want to escape the sand and stretch your legs on softer terrain before or after the race.

  • ▸Wuzhizhou Island sits close to the Haitang Bay venue, making it an easy snorkeling half-day trip if your legs need gentle active recovery post-race.
  • ▸The Nanshan Guanyin statue and Nanshan cultural park make a calm, reflective morning outing that balances out all the pre-race adrenaline nicely.

Where to Eat

Hainan food is a highlight and refueling here is a joy. Start with the Four Famous Dishes of Hainan: Wenchang chicken, Jiaji duck, Dongshan goat and Hele crab. The coconut chicken hotpot is my kind of post-race meal, made with free-range Wenchang chicken simmered in fresh young coconut water for a light, clear, naturally sweet broth and tender meat. Seafood lovers should try steamed sea bass, small abalones, lobster and porridge with Hele crabs, all fresh and satisfying after a hard effort on the floor.

For specific spots, Haitang 68 Global Food Street is closest to the venue and serves Wenchang chicken plus affordable seafood processing restaurants and international options. First Market is famous for Qingbuliang dessert, Hainan rice noodles and lively seafood stalls. The Coconut Dream Corridor is known for coconut chicken and Zaopocu vinegar seafood hotpot with seaside seating. If you want to treat yourself, Haijiao Pavilion at Mandarin Oriental serves premium local Hainan ingredients and seasonal seafood in an open-air setting beside the beach.

  • ▸Try Qingbuliang, a chilled dessert of coconut milk with red beans, mung beans, coix seeds, tapioca and taro balls, as a refreshing carb hit after racing.
  • ▸Haitang 68 Global Food Street is your convenient go-to given it's the closest cluster to the venue in Haitang District with varied, affordable options.

Pauline's Picks & Take

Since I haven't raced Sanya yet, here's exactly what I'd do if you and I were both toeing the line this December. I'd stay in Haitang Bay to keep the venue close, then dedicate race-eve to a gentle course walk and an early dinner at Haitang 68 Global Food Street so I could fuel up without a long drive. Coconut chicken hotpot the night before is light and easy on the stomach, which is what I always want going into eight run stations.

For the day after, I'd reward the effort with something memorable. I'd book a snorkeling trip to Wuzhizhou Island for easy active recovery, then wind down with a chilled bowl of Qingbuliang. If I had a spare morning, I'd visit the Nanshan Guanyin statue for a calm reset before flying home. Sanya rewards athletes who plan a little buffer time, so treat this less like a quick race trip and more like a training holiday with a finish line in the middle.

  • ▸My race-eve plan: short course walk to count laps, light coconut chicken hotpot dinner nearby, hydrate hard in the tropical heat, and sleep early.
  • ▸My recovery plan: Wuzhizhou Island snorkeling, a Qingbuliang dessert stop, and a slow Nanshan morning before catching your flight out of SYX.

Practical Tips

The main gateway is Sanya Phoenix International Airport (SYX). To reach the Haitang Bay venue, a car or taxi covers roughly 24 to 27 miles of road distance in about 30 minutes, which is by far the smoothest option on race morning. Public buses exist, like line 33 from the airport to Haitang Bay Plaza for around one to three US dollars, but it takes about two hours and twenty minutes. That's simply too slow when you're carrying kit and managing nerves before your start time.

For where to stay, Haitang Bay puts you closest to the venue with world-class five-star hotels near the Duty-Free Shop, though it's quieter and pricier, with four-star rooms often running 170 to 500 US dollars and limited public transport. For value and easier dining, Sanya Bay or Dadonghai are more budget-friendly and central, with plenty of restaurants and shopping, but they sit around thirty-plus minutes from the venue. Whichever you pick, arrange private transport for race morning so nothing derails your warm-up.

  • ▸Book a taxi or ride-hail for race morning rather than the bus, since the 30-minute drive beats the roughly two-hour-plus public transport option every time.
  • ▸Stay in Haitang Bay for venue proximity, or Sanya Bay and Dadonghai for value and dining, but plan private transport either way for the start line.

That's my full rundown for Hyrox Sanya, a race I can't wait to see come alive on the calendar. Plan a little buffer, eat all the coconut chicken, and soak up that tropical finish-line air.
