Hi everyone! I'm Pauline Yu (PYY), Taiwan's only 4× Hyrox World Championship qualifier. I haven't raced Dubai yet, but I've studied this city like a race I'm about to run. Dubai is where a desert meets a skyline, where the metro is spotless and the shawarma is late-night gold. If you're chasing a PB in a warm, glossy setting, this one belongs on your list. Let me walk you through the venue, the food, and the little logistics that make or break a race trip.

Venue & Course

Hyrox Dubai has run at two homes. The 2024 edition packed roughly 4,000 competitors into the Dubai World Trade Centre, and the newer stage is the Dubai Exhibition Centre at Expo City Dubai, sitting on Boulevard 2020 in Madinat Al Mataar. The DEC is genuinely easy to reach and fully accessible — step-free access, elevators, accessible restrooms, tactile flooring and braille signage. For an athlete travelling with family or a coach who needs smooth logistics, that kind of venue design quietly removes a lot of pre-race stress you don't need.

On the course itself, I'll be honest with you: I couldn't verify a published Dubai-specific floor plan — exact roxzone length, lap count, or running surface. Hyrox halls are usually flat indoor exhibition floors, so pace it like a standard indoor race and study the official athlete race pack when it drops a few days out. What I can promise is that the roxzone matters more than people think. The clock never stops in transition, so treat it like part of your race, not a rest break.

  • ▸The roxzone is the transition area between your 1km runs and each workout station — walk it slowly and you can quietly bleed several minutes off your final time.
  • ▸Waves start at staggered times rather than all at once, so confirm your exact start slot and arrive early enough to warm up without rushing.
  • ▸Check the official race pack near event day for confirmed hall layout, running surface and schedule — don't trust guesses on exact metrics.

Things to Do

Dubai rewards a rest day, and there's plenty to see between your shakeout jog and your race. The Burj Khalifa towers at 829.8 metres with panoramic skyline views, and right below it the Dubai Fountain — one of the world's largest musical fountains, inspired by the Bellagio in Las Vegas — puts on a show worth lingering for. Palm Jumeirah, the palm-shaped artificial archipelago, is home to Atlantis The Palm and Atlantis The Royal if you want a splashy afternoon that still lets you keep your legs fresh.

If you'd rather stay low-key before race day, the Dubai Frame offers Old-versus-New Dubai views from its glass bridge, and the Dubai Miracle Garden is a genuine winter highlight for anyone who loves colour. Global Village runs about six months a year and packs the world into one place, while Ski Dubai at Mall of the Emirates hides sub-zero slopes and real penguins indoors. My rule for race trips: sightsee gently the day before, save the big walking days for after you've crossed the finish line.

  • ▸Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Fountain sit together downtown, making them an easy combined evening stop that won't wreck your legs before race morning.
  • ▸Dubai Miracle Garden and Global Village are seasonal winter attractions, so check they're open during your race weekend before you plan around them.

Where to Eat

The food in Dubai is where I'd spend my post-race energy. Try machboos, a simple aromatic spiced rice dish, and luqaimat, golden fried dumplings usually served with date syrup and sesame — perfect for that sweet craving after months of clean eating. Shawarma and karak chai are what the city actually runs on day to day, alongside manakish, a za'atar flatbread that makes a great pre-race carb load. Eat familiar and safe the night before, then go exploring the day after.

For places with real history, Arabian Tea House in Al Fahidi is one of Dubai's oldest names, and Al Ustad Special Kabab in the Meena Bazaar area is a Persian favourite that makes a super satisfying meal before you wander the old alleys. Ravi is another legendary long-standing spot, and Al Fanar and Automatic Restaurant are reliable for Emirati and Arabic cuisine. These are the kind of honest, well-worn kitchens I always seek out over anything flashy on a race trip.

  • ▸Al Ustad Special Kabab in Meena Bazaar is a satisfying Persian meal spot and pairs nicely with a walk through the old bazaar alleys afterwards.
  • ▸Arabian Tea House in Al Fahidi and Ravi are long-standing legends — go for the atmosphere and stick to lighter dishes the night before you race.

Pauline's Picks & Take

If I were racing Dubai, here's how I'd play it. I'd base myself in Dubai Marina or JBR — it's the most walkable part of new Dubai and only about 25 to 30 minutes from the venue by metro, which is a huge advantage over Downtown at 40 to 45 minutes. Somewhere like Rove Dubai Marina keeps you within walking distance of the beach, the mall and the Metro, so your race morning is calm and predictable. Predictable is exactly what you want when nerves are already loud.

For the trip itself, I'd sightsee the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Fountain the evening before, keep race-eve dinner simple with manakish or plain machboos, and save Palm Jumeirah and the bigger walking days for after the finish line. Post-race, I'd earn my luqaimat and karak chai without guilt. Treat the roxzone as active running, respect the warm indoor conditions, and remember that in a staggered-wave race, your only real competition is the clock and your own transitions.

  • ▸Stay in Dubai Marina or JBR for the shortest metro ride to the venue, saving your legs and your patience on a high-stakes race morning.

Practical Tips

The venue is one of the easiest big destinations in the UAE to reach by public transport, thanks to its dedicated Expo 2020 station (R76) on the Metro Red Line, a few minutes' walk from the DEC. The ride from Dubai International Airport (DXB) runs roughly 73 to 76 minutes, and it's fully air-conditioned and step-free. One catch: DXB Terminal 3 is on the Red Line, but some services need a change at Jabal Ali to reach Expo 2020, so always confirm your train's final destination before you settle in.

Because Expo City sits at the end of the line, many journeys hit the maximum metro fare — around AED 7.5 with a Nol card, still cheap next to taxis. From Marina or JBR it's about 25 to 30 minutes, Downtown 40 to 45, and Deira or Bur Dubai a longer 55 to 75. Feeder buses, taxis, Careem and Uber cover the gaps if the metro doesn't reach your door. Buy your Nol card early and do a practice run the day before so nothing surprises you on race morning.

  • ▸Grab a Nol card on arrival and expect the max metro fare of around AED 7.5 since Expo City sits right at the end of the Red Line.
  • ▸Some Red Line trains require a change at Jabal Ali for Expo 2020, so always check the train's destination board before boarding on race morning.

That's my Dubai playbook — a shiny city with easy metro access, warm food, and a venue built for a smooth race day. I can't wait to hear how your Dubai race goes, so send me your splits and your favourite luqaimat spot.
